The Best Time to Snorkel in Aruba

The hour of the day matters more than the month. Here is why, and what each season actually changes.

The best time to snorkel in Aruba is between seven and ten in the morning. That single decision changes more than anything else you can control.

Most guides answer this question with a month. The month matters less than the hour.

Why the best time to snorkel in Aruba is early

Aruba sits in the path of a steady trade wind. The wind is light at dawn, and it builds through the day.

Calm water is clear water. So by lunchtime the surface chop has cost you several metres of visibility, and the same reef looks like a different place.

There is a second reason, too. Tour catamarans start arriving at the popular reefs after ten. Before then you often have the water to yourself, and the animals behave normally.

What the seasons change

Water temperature is not one of them. It sits between 26 and 29°C all year, so no month is warmer enough to plan around.

What changes is the wind and the swell.

December to April is the dry season. Conditions on the south and west coasts are at their steadiest, and visibility at Malmok Beach can reach thirty metres.

May to October suits the northern tip better. The trade winds ease, which is when Arashi Beach and Tres Trapi are at their best.

From November to April, however, a north swell can hit the northwest coast. When it does, Arashi goes from clear to unusable in a morning.

How to check before you drive

Look at the windsock at the California Lighthouse on the way north. It takes ten seconds, and it is on the road anyway.

If it is standing straight out, the north coast will be rough. Go south to Mangel Halto instead, because the mangrove bay is sheltered from exactly that wind.

The short version

Set an alarm. Be in the water by eight. Pick the coast that matches the wind, not the one nearest your hotel.

Then, if you want reef you cannot swim to, book a boat for another morning — the snorkeling tours all sail the leeward side. The Aruba Tourism Authority covers the rest of the island.

Where to stay near the water

The reefs worth an early start are spread from Malmok to San Nicolas. Staying on the right side of the island saves you an hour of driving at dawn.
