Is Aruba Good for Snorkeling? An Honest Answer

Good, not world-class — and unusually good for shore access. What Aruba does well, and what it does not.

Is Aruba good for snorkeling? Yes, and it is unusually good for shore snorkeling. It is not Bonaire, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Here is the honest version of what you get.

What Aruba is genuinely good at

Access, first. Six reefs are reachable without a boat, several within a minute of the sand, and all of them are free.

Reliability, second. The water sits at 26 to 29°C year-round, and the leeward coast is sheltered from the trade wind that blows almost every day.

Then there are the specifics. Boca Catalina is a genuinely dependable turtle site. Malmok has eagle rays and the Antilla wreck offshore. Arashi has a density of sponges you will not see elsewhere in the region.

Where Aruba is weaker

Coral cover is the honest weak point. Decades of development and storms have thinned it, and much of the reef is structure rather than living coral.

Mangel Halto is the exception and it is worth the drive for that reason.

Visibility is also variable. It can hit thirty metres in the dry season, but an afternoon in a strong trade wind can cut it to ten.

And the whole windward coast is off limits. That is not a preference — it is open Atlantic with real current, and it kills people who underestimate it.

Who Aruba suits

It suits families very well, because Baby Beach is about as safe as snorkeling gets.

It suits anyone who wants to snorkel daily without booking anything, since you can drive to a different reef each morning.

It suits wreck snorkelers, thanks to the Antilla.

It suits hardcore reef photographers less well. For dense living coral, Bonaire is forty minutes away by plane and better at it.

So is Aruba good for snorkeling?

Yes, with one condition. Come for the access, the turtles and the wreck, rather than for coral cover.

Set your alarm for a morning start, because that decides more than the site you pick. The best time to snorkel in Aruba explains why.
