Mangel Halto vs Baby Beach: Which Should You Snorkel?

Mangel Halto vs Baby Beach is really a question about who is in your car. One has the best coral in Aruba; the other has the calmest water.

Both are on the south coast, and neither is reachable by tour boat.

Pick Mangel Halto if you want the reef

Mangel Halto has the healthiest coral on the island: star and brain coral, sea fans, and enough structure that the fish actually live there.

Visibility runs 15 to 25 metres on a normal morning. Green turtles graze the seagrass, eagle rays pass through, and there are moray eels in the coral heads.

The trade-off is effort. You swim about fifty metres from the sandy entry to reach the reef, and there are no facilities of any kind — no toilets, no shade, nowhere to buy water.

Pick Baby Beach if you want easy

Baby Beach is an enclosed lagoon with effectively no current, where you can stand up almost anywhere.

There is a large free car park, restrooms and a weekend food truck. As a result it is the one site where a nervous swimmer or a small child is genuinely comfortable.

The trade-off is the snorkeling itself. Visibility runs 5 to 15 metres, lower than the northwest sites, and the coral is patchy rather than continuous.

The practical difference

Mangel Halto rewards a competent swimmer with the best reef in Aruba. Baby Beach rewards everybody else with a morning that works.

They are about forty minutes apart, so doing both in one day is realistic. Do Mangel Halto first, because it wants the calmer early water more.
