Snorkeling in Aruba with Kids

Aruba is one of the best Caribbean destinations for snorkeling with children. The island has naturally protected lagoons with flat-calm water, zero current, and shallow depths ideal for young snorkelers. Here is everything families need to know.
Best Spots for Kids
Baby Beach is the top choice -- a completely enclosed natural lagoon with sandy bottom, 0.5-2m depth and no current. It has an on-site restaurant making it perfect for a full family day. Boca Catalina is second best -- a wide shallow west-coast bay where sea turtles appear at 1-3 metres. Mangel Halto works well for confident swimmers aged 8 and over.
Minimum Age for Snorkeling
Children as young as 4-5 can snorkel at Baby Beach with a flotation vest. Children aged 7-8 with solid swimming ability can manage Boca Catalina. By age 10-12 most children handle any of the six Aruba shore snorkel sites in calm morning conditions.
Essential Gear for Children
A correctly fitting mask is the most important item -- bring children's masks from home rather than relying on rentals. A snorkel vest adds safety and confidence. Apply reef-safe mineral sunscreen 30 minutes before entering water -- chemical sunscreens are prohibited at all Aruba marine sites.
What Kids Will See
Children are most excited by sea turtles at Boca Catalina -- large, slow-moving and often approaching within arm's length. Colourful fish at Baby Beach delight younger children. Eagle rays at Mangel Halto create unforgettable moments for older kids aged 8+.
Safety Tips for Families
Never let children snorkel without an adult in the water. At Baby Beach the water is so calm even non-swimmers can stand anywhere. Keep children away from coral -- contact damages the reef and causes cuts. Always use reef-safe sunscreen and reapply every two hours.
Family Logistics
Baby Beach has a small restaurant on-site. The drive from Palm Beach is 35-40 minutes -- plan 3-4 hours to make it worthwhile. Bring drinking water, snacks, a beach shade tent and towels. Arrive by 9 AM on weekends.
